Men’s Shed projects are quickly spreading throughout the UK, having been born in Australia, where they give the opportunity for men to come together to work on various hobbies and pastimes with the aim to fill a void in men’s lives after they retire or find themselves in a period of unemployment for whatever reason. Alongside the hobbies and projects most Sheds also have a way of generating some income for themselves, be it through making garden furniture or bird feeders, wood turning bowls or ornaments or any other skill that somebody may be able to utilise.
Wellingborough Mind currently has a small Shed operating out of a garage/workshop at its premises on 14 Havelock Street where abandoned and donated bicycles are repaired and made good to sell through its charity shop on Park Road but hopefully there is scope for the project to gain momentum and develop to the point where projects such as model train layouts, remote control planes, engineering and woodworking workshops and mechanical engineering projects may be undertook (although much depends on the availability of funding and suitable affordable premises to site these) and also the possibility of starting groups of common interest such as a golf society, a fishing group, a photographic group or a ramblers group.
